Owen Ward pitched four solid innings and got plenty of help at the plate May 22 as Carroll County’s baseball team ended the regular season with a 7-1 Three Rivers District victory at Radford.

With the win, Carroll County improved to 15-4 overall and earned the right to host a Region 3D Quarterfinal on Friday, May 24 against Lord Botetourt at 6 p.m. Ward allowed just three hits in four scoreless innings of work to earn the win. He struck out three and walked two.

Ward would get all the support he would need in the first inning. After back-to-back leadoff walks to Britt Berrier and Gage Nicholson, Ben Phillips ripped an RBI single. Avery Hart also slapped an RBI single and Camden DeHaven walked with the bases loaded to provide the Cavs with a quick 3-0 lead.

After batting through the lineup in the first inning, Carroll started off strong again in the second after Berrier singled and took second and third bases on wild pitches. Berrier would score on a Cody Reece grounder, while Nicholson would walk and later score on an error for a 5-0 advantage.

The Cavaliers added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning after DeHaven and Mason Crockett both singled. DeHaven would score on a wild pitch and Crockett crossed home plate following an error.

Eight different players had one hit for Carroll in the win, while Berrier and Nicholson each scored twice. Reece, Phillips, Hart and DeHaven each had an RBI for the winning Cavs.
