Hillsville Town Council at its May 13th meeting honored Zula Coleman for more than two decades of service on the Hillsville Planning Commission. Matthew Goad was appointed to fill the remainder of Coleman’s term, which will expire September 1, 2026. Council recessed following a closed meeting and will reconvene at 4 p.m. on May 22 at Town Hall.

“Zula has been quite dedicated on the commission and has been debating on how many years plus twenty she would serve. We are quite thankful and wish she could be here with us,” said Terry. “We’ll create a delegation to present her with a token of our appreciation.”

Councilmen Greg Yonce and Barry Jessup as well as Vice Mayor “Ed” Terry praised volunteers and town employees for their hard work on the May 11th Second Saturday Celebration, which saw the initial hopes for a good turnout curtailed by rain. Yonce said organizers were hopeful the storm would go around the venue when it tapered off only to return forcefully. He commended the work of Tourism Director Lauren Chitwood on new plantings in flowerpots along Main Street.

“The town is really looking good and I want to thank everyone for the hard work. The town sign is really looking good,” said Jessup.

According to the Hillsville Police Department (HPD) Law Enforcement Activity Numbers Report for March 1st through April 30th, the department served 12 warrants, conducted 2,364 business checks and 19 personal welfare checks. The HPD had 15 false calls/unfounded during this time and served 932 uniform summons for speeding and 80 uniform summons for reckless driving.

The department served four uniform summons for child safety belts and two for failure to move over. Officers observed 57 vehicles carrying trash within town limits.
