One night after playing Bassett in Hillsville in the #8–#9 game, Carroll County traveled across Lovers Leap to play #1 seed Magna Vista on Thursday.

Add in that the Lady Cavaliers were playing back-to-back matches and doing so minus three starters versus the best team in our region, properly setting the stage.

CCHS was down to their final seconds when Magna Vista was called for a Red Card inside the Box.

Ashlyn Newman proceeded to knot the game at 2-2 and it would stay that way throughout the entire overtime ritual. No Golden Goal for either squad eventually led to penalty kicks with Newman sliding into the net as the keeper in hopes of extending her high school career. Newman has experience between the goal post, both early on and then in travel ball.

Even the PKs portion of the match ended in a 4-4 draw, sending it into Golden Goal format. The season would finally come to an end for the group I love to call The Battling Ben Tickles and tonight they did exactly that for just shy of three hours.

Ashlyn Newman recorded a hat trick and the defense pitched a shutout May 22 as Carroll County’s girls’ soccer team defeated Bassett 5-0 in a Region 3D Play-In game in Hillsville.

With the win, Carroll County (12-3) advanced to play top-seeded Magna Vista on May 23 in Axton in a region quarterfinal. Callie Harris got the Cavalier offense going, hooking up with Newman for the first and only goal of the opening half.

The score stayed that way until 10 minutes into the second half when Jacqueline Arellano assisted Harris for a goal and a 2-0 Carroll lead. The third goal featured the Newman-Harris combo again, but this time the roles were reversed as Newman assisted Harris for her seventh goal of the year. The Cavs made it 4-0 when Karmen Smith made a great pass to fellow captain Newman for her second goal of the night and a 4-0 lead.

The final goal come on a foul in the box and the Cavaliers were awarded with a penalty kick that Newman put in the back of the net for another hat trick and her school-record 37th goal of the season.
