Tia Jennings and Ashlynn Culbreth, both of Hillsville, have been honored by The Carroll News as this year’s special award winners for leaders in the equine community.

Ashlynn, Virginia High School barrels state champion and Miss Virginia High School Rodeo, is the 2024 Carroll News Cowgirl of the Year, while Tia, coordinator of the Carroll County Fair Horse Show and volunteer worker and mentor at other events, is the 2024 Carroll News Horsewoman of the Year.

The honorees were announced August 18 during the Carroll County Ag Fair Horse Show and the cowgirls received awards during the weekend. The awards are co-sponsored by Tractor Supply of Galax, local outlet for farmers, ranchers and animal caretakers, which presented both with gift cards to be used for purchases at the store.

On hand for the presentation was last year’s Carroll News Horsewoman of the Year, Erin Tate of Hillsville, who coordinated this year’s horse show with a capable staff.

Skyler Lawson, local Trainer with the National Reined Cow Horse Association, will present a special program at the Carroll County Agricultural Fair Thursday night, August 22, at 6:30 p.m. as he breaks down the world of Reigned Cow Horse.

He will be showcasing and explaining the events that reined cow horses consist of, the equipment used by different aged horses, and the events offered for all ages and levels of riders.

Khloie Arnold, Mazie Kennedy, Harper Delp, Cole Martin, Brelyn Moore, Aspyn Harner and Josey Moore all scored impressive runs in a couple of barrel racing events held recently.

Brelyn took first place followed by Aspyn second in Youth 1D at the Salty Sisters Barrel Bash August 10. Josey placed first and second in Advanced Pee Wee.

Khloie took first place in Youth 1D while Mazie Kennedy went one-two in Youth 3D August 16 at R&R Arena. Harper Delp won Pee Wee 1D and placed second in Open 2D. Cole won Open 4D.
