After receiving the Twin County Community Scholarship, two Wytheville Community College students, Abigail Lineberry and Roseanna Horton, chose to do their service hours at the historic Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home located at 405 North Main Street in Hillsville.

Both girls have been volunteering and serving on committees at the Carter Home for the past two years.

“They are excellent help and have many wonderful ideas, especially for fundraising. They just brighten up the whole place!,” stated Huff Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home Foundation President Elizabeth Huff.

According to Huff, one of their ideas was to have a yard sale and multi-raffle event with yard sale items donated by the community and raffle items donated by local businesses. The girls did all the leg work, all the advertising and all the selling for the event. On June 3 they gave the yard sale and raffle proceeds to the H.W.Carter Home Foundation which amounted to $1,250.80. Since the first yard sale and raffle event was so successful, Lineberry and Horton decided to have a second one; however, their goal was to raise even more money at the next event.

The girls “hit the road running.” They contacted businesses for raffle items, advertised the sale and started collecting items. They conducted the second yard sale/raffle event on August 23 and August 24. Abigail and Rose had the front porch of the Carter Home loaded with all kinds of bargains, as well as the front yard filled with everything from furniture and clothing to a library of books and surprisingly...a Paris picture collection. The Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home Foundation, Abigail Lineberry and Rose Horton would like to thank all the people who donated items to be sold at the August yard sale.

“It was truly amazing to have so many nice items contributed to the sale!,” said Huff. “We also want to thank the local businesses who donated raffle items and recognize the winners of the raffle. Business which donated and raffle winners were: Quilts on Main — Shelby Sowers, The Graceful Goose — Collene Webb, Elite Styles — Russell Burkholder, Clarks on Main — Shelby Sowers, Crystal’s Salon — “Roberta,” Galax Cakery — Rodney Gillespie, New River Trail — “Jim” Grounded Coffee — Emma Hill, Fiddlers Restaurant — Eleanor Gillespie -Parke Quesenberry, Black Sheep Boutique — Angie Kimble, The Barn Cafe, Ellen Coe, Guynn Furniture — Valerie Padgett, Hillsville Diner — “Amy D,” -Iva Gallimore — Greg Kimble, Red Hill — Cheryl Nichols, The Mason Jar — Gerald Worrell, Shell Gas — Sallie Ballard, Mule Hill Co. — Tegan Young, B&P Restaurant — Gilmer Allison.

The Foundation would also like to thank Food Lion for donating several boxes of brownie mix to the sale. In addition we would like to thank all those who came by and supported us by purchasing yard sale items and raffle tickets.

At the September 9 Carter Home Board of Directors meeting, Abigail Lineberry and Roseanne Horton presented a check in the amount of $1,311 to the Foundation from their second yard sale/raffle. These young ladies are to be commended for their hard work, dedication and giving back to their community while attending W.C.C. and working a part-time job. These two ambitious W.C.C. students continue to volunteer and contribute new ideas to the H.W. Carter Home Foundation. We encourage everyone to look for upcoming events at the Carter HOme in the near future. Many thanks to everyone who supports the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home Foundation and its various events.
