Effort underway to increase usage of Historic Courthouse
A local elected official is involved in the formative stages of efforts to enable more use of the Historic Carroll County Courthouse. Carroll County Clerk of Circuit Court Gerald Goad would like to see improvements to the structure allow more accessibility, meeting space for local organizations and aid local tourism. Carroll County Sheriff’s Department deputies manned a booth during National Night Out on August 6 during the Back to School Bash at Tommy Thompson Field. National Night Out was founded on the belief the best way to reach the community, especially children, is by letting them see officers in a positive light.

Hillsville Police Department Officers were on hand to man a booth at National Night Out on August 6 at CCHS. Public Safety Demos were held during the event, which also enjoyed a visit from representatives of the Forestry Service and an AirCare Air Ambulance Helicopter touchdown, and tours were offered to participants.

Rooftop of VA, Virginia Housing open waiting list for housing choice voucher applications
Rooftop of Virginia and Virginia Housing will open the Housing Choice Voucher Waiting List on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, to take applications. The program will take applications online only. Two hundred applicants will be chosen randomly by lottery to be added to the waiting list. Not everyone who applies will be added to the waiting list if more than 200 people apply. ...
APCo receives approval to complete power grid improvements
The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) has approved Appalachian Power’s application to construct the Stuart Area Improvements Project. The project involves constructing several components in the next few years to benefit customers in Carroll, Floyd, Franklin, Henry and Patrick counties. These upgrades provide a new power source for the region and increase electric reliability for customers. The project replaces deteriorating equipment that is 60 to 100 years old, upgrades equipment capacity, and adds four substations to improve the local distribution system. ...

Carroll County Public Schools Back to School Bash participants got to interact with Cavalier Cheerleaders dancing during the annual event, which signifies the beginning of the school year. The Marching Cavalier Band also performed at the celebration. Many school groups and local public schools had booths set up at CCHS for the benefit of students.

Attendance at the CCPS Back to School Bash on August 6 appeared to be robust with no parking spaces available around Carroll County High. This booth was particularly popular early on as volunteers gave out school supply packets. There was also a “Pack the Bus” benefit and many booths offering school supplies, clothing, games, prizes and snacks for participants.

Milepost Music concerts are held at Mabry Mill on the first and third Sundays of each month in June, July, August, and September. "Lovely Mountaineers" will perform on Sunday, Aug. 18. Gina and Jason Dilg of Lovely Mountaineers are based in Southwest Virginia. They play foot-stomping dance tunes and old country ballads of the American string band repertoire.
Airstream contingent comes to Hillsville
For the 16th consecutive year, a group of approximately 70 airstreamers visited Hillsville from all over the country. The large group from Region 3 of Airstream Club International were in Hillsville visiting the Historic Carroll County Courthouse and the Carroll County Historical Society Museum before enjoying lunch at the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home. The airstreamers (a group of RVers who share a mutual love of the brand) were in the area for the Annual Old Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax, but also to spend a day in Hillsville. ...

Cavalier Kudos program to highlight CCHS staff, fund activities
A new program at Carroll County High School will not only highlight the achievements of the school’s educators and staff, it will also pump in money to programs that could use a boost. The program, called Cavalier Kudos, is a positive peer recognition program where any staff member may recognize another staff member for going above and beyond for them personally, another staff member, or a student.
