West Virginia sends $12M to state's volunteer fire departments

(The Center Square) – West Virginia again is sending $12 million to fire departments and emergency services across the state.

The measure was funded through House Bill 5128, with Gov. Jim Justice holding a ceremonial signing of the bill joined by the West Virginia Firemen’s Association.

The bill sends $6 million to the state’s Fire Protection Fund, where it will be evenly distributed to volunteer fire departments across the state to fund day-to-day operations. It will also provide $3 million apiece for the All County Fire Protection Fund and County Fire Protection Fund.

“Our volunteer firefighters are the lifeblood of our communities, the people we turn to when emergencies strike,” Justice told the group. “Many times, you are away from your families just to help others in a time of need. I cannot think of anything more wholesome. I cannot thank you enough for your work. This money is a drop in the bucket, but you’re absolutely worth every penny. Thank you all for everything you do for West Virginia.”

Last year, a trio of bills sent $12 million to fire departments while creating a special revenue fund through the secretary of the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security to send funds to local county commissions in counties with excess levies or dedicated fees related to emergency services.
