(The Center Square) – Michigan's health department is taking applicants for a new “Michigan Racial Health Equity Think Tank.” The forum group is one part of the fiscal year 2025 state budget’s $35 million in Racial Disparities Task Force recommendations.

The MDHHS website describes MiRHETT as a part of the Social Determinants of Health program, first implemented in 2022. The forum series will gather statewide leaders to “address and improve disparity gaps for racial minorities.” They will discuss final reports from the Black Leadership Advisory Council, the Michigan Coronavirus Racial Disparities Task Force, the Michigan Poverty Tax Force and the Health Equity Plan.

“Improving social determinants of health requires continuous and collaborative support with engaged community partners throughout our state,” MDHHS director Elizabeth Hertel said. “Innovative efforts like the Michigan Racial Equity Think Tank that work to find solutions to collaborate and improve the lives of our residents are necessary to make our state more equitable for all.”

The program is looking for applicants involved in community foundations, MDHHS leadership, community health specialists and epidemiologists with a focus on minority health.

MiRHETT is taking applications from diverse public health leaders for an interactive forum that would take place from September to January. The survey closes Aug. 23.
