Secret Service, law enforcement offer security update as convention gets underway

(The Center Square) – U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement officials say they are prepared for protests and other potential security issues related to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Mayor Brandon Johnson said there is a reason Chicago has hosted more national political conventions than anywhere else in America. U.S. Secret Service Deputy Special Agent in Charge Derek Mayer said the federal government’s full complement of resources are available to provide a safe and secure environment.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said one person was arrested for defacing property during a protest in downtown Chicago on Sunday.

Snelling referred to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania last month, saying law-enforcement officials would be sure to secure everything so something like that wouldn’t happen in Chicago.
