Harris campaign predicts tight presidential race as DNC moves ahead

(The Center Square) – Congressman Robert Garcia, D-Calif., opened up the second day of the Democratic National Convention by saying Vice President Kamala Harris has an uphill battle.

"We are the underdog campaign," Garcia said Tuesday. "We're not taking anything for granted."

Harris campaign communications director Michael Tyler called it a "margin-of-error race" in his comments Tuesday morning. He said the election could come down tens of thousands of votes.

Former President Donald Trump had led in early presidential race polls when he was facing incumbent President Joe Biden. After Biden dropped out in July and turned his campaign over to Harris, she brought new momentum to the ticket. Poll guru Nate Silver's election forecast model on Monday showed Harris (47%) ahead of Trump (44.7%) and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (4.2%).

A reporter asked DNC leaders Tuesday if the convention would feature any Palestinian speakers. The question came a day after a pro-Palestinian rally and march in a Chicago park near the United Center on Monday.

Tyler said Harris understands the concerns of the demonstrators. Demonstrators at Monday's rally disputed that. They said that whoever wins the presidential race, more work will need to be done to end U.S. aid to Israel.

On Monday, Trump said Harris won't win and bemoaned the campaign change-up.

"So now, for the first time in American history, I'll have to beat TWO Candidates, the second being a Radical Left Marxist, Comrade Kamala Harris," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "It's not fair, perhaps even another form of Election Interference, but the good news is that she should be easier than to beat than Crooked Joe in that the USA will never allow itself to become a Communist Country."
