Resolve to make new year resolutions you can keep
It’s that time of year again, time to start the New Year’s resolutions we made in a holiday spirit of confidence and determination and begin that diet or write that book. Last week’s Sun newspapers reported extensively on towns, school boards and other municipal agencies that both anticipated and promised to accomplish certain tasks like full-time preschool, school building upgrades and road repairs. New mayors, school board members and other appointees took oaths for 2024 and vowed to get right to work.
Measles case reported in Camden County
One of the greatest medical fears of parents in the early 20th century was a child with measles, a time when some 6,000 deaths a year were caused by the easily spread virus. By the 1950s, between three and four million people a year were infected, with close to 500 deaths and 1,000 cases of resulting encephalitis that caused the brain to swell, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Board of education swears in new members
The Cherry Hill board of education swore in Miriam Stern, Kimberly Gallagher and Renee Cherfane as new members at its reorganization meeting on Jan. 2. The board then reelected Stern as its president in a 6-2 vote – with Cherfane and Gallagher voting no – and reelected Joel Mayer vice president in a 7-1 vote, with Cherfane voting no. It also approved member Sally Tong as district representative to both the Camden County School Board Association’s executive committee and the New Jersey School Boards Association. Gallagher was named district representative for the Camden County Educational Services Commission.

The faces of gun violence victims
An art exhibit that portrays gun violence victims on the second floor of the Woodbury library on Dec. 23 includes portraits of young people whose lives were ended by bullets. “Each artist in this series created a portrait of a victim of gun violence,” said Loren Dann, an artist, teacher and a Souls Shot Portrait Project participant known as “The Art Lady.” She painted a depiction of 10-year-old Hunter Robert Pederson, who was accidentally shot and killed by his uncle in 2014.

CASA volunteers are ‘voices’ for foster-care kids
Camden County Superior Court Judge Linda W. Eynon recently swore in seven New Jersey residents as Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers. The ceremony was the culmination of 35 hours of instruction in child advocacy, the family court system and cultural competency. CASA volunteers meet with and advocate on behalf of children and youth living in the foster care system and recommend resources and services regarding their education, medical and overall well-being.
