Free Tickets to Mayor’s State of the City
Free tickets to Mayor Gary Christenson’s 2024 State of the City Address being held on Monday, March 4th from 8-9 AM at Anthony's will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and will be required for admittance. Attendees may obtain tickets via Event Bright. Due to capacity, seating will be limited, and residents are encouraged to secure tickets early. For admittance into the event, please make sure you have your ticket printed out or have the QR code ready to be scanned on your phone.
Snow Emergency
We have declared a SNOW EMERGENCY beginning at 9pm tonight, February 12th. The snow emergency will remain in effect until we notify you that it has been lifted. With the forecasts calling for snow totals of 8 inches or more, the City of Malden will begin Winter Parking restrictions tonight starting at 9pm. These restrictions restrict parking to the odd-numbered side of the street 24 hours per day, 7 days per week regardless of weather conditions until further notice. As a reminder, the "Odd-numbered" side of the street is defined as the side where house numbers are odd such as 21 Main Street.
Walk and Roll to School
Mayor Gary Christenson, City Councillors Steve Winslow and Ari Tayor and School Committee member Sharyn Rose-Zeiberg joined the Linden Community to participate in the Winter Walk and Roll to School as part of the MASSDot Safe Routes to School Program this week. Students, teachers, and families met at Hawkridge Delta Park on Beach Street or Steve’s Corner Store on Salem Street in an effort to raise awareness of getting to school safely. The program works to increase safe walking and biking among elementary, middle and high school students by using a collaborative community focused approach. School leaders encouraged students to wear bright colors in the evening or early morning, to cross at cross walks, be aware of surroundings, and to always look both ways before crossing.
Mayor Declares February 5-9 National School Counseling Week
In coordination with Erin Craven, Malden Public Schools Director of School Counseling, Testing & Academic Support, Mayor Gary Christenson officially proclaimed February 5-9 National School Counseling Week. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping student be successful in school and plan for their future.
Mayor Christenson and City Council Announce Vacancies on the Police Community Advisory Council
Mayor Gary Christenson and the City Council are reaching out to Malden residents to fill five (5) positions on the newly formed Police Community Advisory Council (PCAC). Pursuant to City of Malden Code, 2.16.160, the PCAC consists of seven (7) members in total with five (5) appointed by the Mayor and City Council and two (2) youth members appointed by the Superintendent of Schools. Employees of the Malden Police Department are not eligible, nor may there be a police officer in applicant’s household. Membership of the PCAC shall be representative of the demographics of Malden in terms of race, gender, age, immigration status, and other relevant factors or identities.
Longtime Edgeworth Business Owner Retires
Mayor Gary Christenson presented longtime Malden business owner, Nick Kombouras with a citation commending him for 45 years of operating Malden-famous Big A Sub Shop. Well-known as a staple in the Edgeworth neighborhood, Nick purchased the business in 1980 and built it up to being a favorite destination for generations of Maldonians. The Mayor thanked Nick for his contributions to the community and also congratulated the new owners who promised to continue the Big A’s reputation of providing excellent food and top-notch customer service.
Malden Community Electricity Approved by DPU: City Preparing to Launch Program in 2024
Mayor Gary Christenson, City Councillor at Large Carey McDonald, Senator Jason Lewis and Representatives Paul Donato, Steve Ultrino, and Kate Lipper-Garabedian are pleased to announce that the City has received approval of its Malden Community Electricity program from the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU). Malden Community Electricity will be an electricity aggregation program that will provide new, City-vetted options for electricity supply and increase renewable energy throughout the entire community.
Mayor’s 2024 State of the City to be Held at Anthony’s
Mayor Gary Christenson is pleased to announce that his 2024 State of the City Address will take place on Monday, March 4th from 8-9 AM at Anthony's of Malden, 105 Canal Street. This will mark the first in-person gathering for the State of the City Address since the onset of the pandemic. Doors will open at 7:30 AM and coffee will be served.
Mayor Seeks Associate Member for Board of Appeal
Mayor Gary Christenson is reaching out to Malden residents to fill the vacancy of associate member on the Board of Appeal. The present vacancy is the result a member stepping down from the Bard. The seven-member Board (five members and two associate members) operates under the mandates of M.G.L. c. 40A and the City of Malden zoning ordinance. The Board of Appeal assists in the administration of the City's zoning ordinance by considering appeals to vary dimensional controls (lot size, frontage, height, setback, etc.) when a literal application of the ordinance would impose a hardship. Residents may also appeal decisions of the Building Inspector to the Board of Appeal.
Ndaba Mandela, Grandson of Nelson Mandela Visits Malden Catholic High School
Last week, Malden Catholic High School rolled out the red carpet for Ndaba Thembekile Mandela, grandson of world-famous Nobel Peace Prize recipient Nelson Mandela. The Malden Catholic community invited Mayor Gary Christenson, and surrounding city Mayors, Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria, former Melrose Mayor Rob Donlan, and Medford Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn to participate in the program that honored Ndaba for continuing his grandfather’s grueling fight for justice and racial equality. Ndbaba shared his life’s work and insights with the entire student body.
BC Honors Malden Resident with Distinguished Alumni Award
Mayor Gary Christenson was in attendance to surprise Malden resident Scune Carrington, MSW, LISCW, as she was awarded the Boston College School of Social Work’s Equity, Justice and Inclusion Distinguished Alumni Award. Scune is the Director of Integrated Care at the Mass League of Community Health Centers and serves on several Boards and Commissions, including as Chair of Malden’s Board of Health.
Tax & Files Celebrate with a Grand Opening
Mayor Gary Christenson recently attended a ribbon cutting ceremony at Tax & Files located at 67 Summer Street. In business since 2017, they now offer more than tax services including accounting, payroll, notary, document translation, money transfer and also travel services. Business Owner William Corrender looks forward to being a valuable resource to the community. He is particularly proud that they have grown from one full-time employee to four full-time employees and two part-time employees. Chris Rosa Wins “Tree Warden of the Year” Award for Malden!
Chris Rosa, Malden’s Cemetery Director, who also serves as Malden’s Tree Warden was honored at the 2024 Massachusetts Tree Wardens' and Foresters' Association annual conference winning the 2024 Massachusetts Tree Warden of the Year award! Chris, who for many years owned a landscaping business started at the Malden Department of Public Works as Assistant Director in 2018 and became Tree Warden in 2022. Chris is responsible for planting and managing the City’s tree inventory which consists of all public shade trees including schools, parks and public buildings. Since becoming Tree Warden, Chris has received more than $135,000 in planting grant monies. He was the first to discover and manage the Emerald Ash Borer in the City as well as to sign a vegetation management plan with utility companies. In addition to maintaining the City’s Tree City USA status he created Malden’s first ever tree planting and protection guideline book. The City is grateful to Chris for continually striving to create a diverse and sustainable urban forest for Malden.
Malden Resident up for MA Distinguished Young Woman of the Year
Mayor Gary Christenson recently surprised Malden resident Alyssa Babineau with a congratulatory citation in advance of her representing Massachusetts at the upcoming Distinguished Young Women of Massachusetts Program. The organization (formerly America’s Jr. Miss) is part of a national scholarship program the promotes and awards college scholarships to deserving young women. Alyssa, a senior at Malden Catholic High School is a member of the National Honor Society. A lifelong student of dance, Alyssa also dances 3-4 times a week at Paula Terenzi’s Dance Complex where she also serves as a Dance Studio Assistant. Mayor Christenson wished Alyssa the best of luck on behalf of the City!

MTEC Offers Guitar Lessons Courtesy of the Late Tom Feagley
Last month the Malden Teen Enrichment Center (MTEC) hosted their first ever guitar lesson. In the 11 years that MTEC has hosted activities and programs for the youth of Malden, guitar lessons have been a bucket list-item, and it was a thrill to finally see this goal come alive. Under the guidance of instructor Mark Damon, seven MTEC members spent four Thursdays in December and will spend time in January learning the basics of guitar playing.
Malden Resident Celebrates 80 Years
Longtime Malden resident and stalwart community member Lenny Iovino recently turned 80 years young! Mayor Gary Christenson stopped into a recent celebration to present him with a citation in recognition of his milestone birthday. Lenny, who served the Malden Public Schools for 36 years as a teacher and then principal of the Salemwood School also served as the Principal of the Lincoln School. He later went on to represent Ward 4 as their School Committee Member for 15 years. The Mayor also thanked Lenny for his devotion to the students of Malden.
City of Malden 2024 Inaugural Celebration
The City of Malden held its Inaugural Ceremony on Tuesday, January 2nd in the Jenkins Auditorium of Malden High School. Mayor Gary Christenson along with members of the City Council and School Committee were sworn in for their new terms in traditional Malden style. The celebration began with newly appointed City Messenger Neal Anderson leading the delegation to the stage followed by the Malden Police and Fire Honor Guards. The Malden Girl Scouts initiated the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem was beautifully sung by Ward 5 Malden Resident Jennifer Dhanjee.
