Authorities confirmed three 19-year-olds were killed and more than a dozen people were injured in a weekend shooting outside an Indianola nightclub in Sunflower County.

Indianola Mayor Ken Featherstone told the Clarion Ledger there was a large crowd of people gathered around a local club before the Sunday midnight shooting on Church Street.

Sunflower County Coroner Heather Burton identified Areon Butler, Cameron Lee Burts and Marquette Baites as the three individuals killed. All of them were 19 years old.

Featherstone also told the Clarion Ledger at least 16 or 17 people, including the three men, were either shot directly or hit by ricochet bullets.

Featherstone said some that were severely injured were transported down to a hospital in Jackson, but he could not confirm which hospital. Some victims were flown out by helicopter, and others received treatment at a Sunflower County hospital. Featherstone could not confirm how many were in critical condition.

"We have assisted the Indianola police department with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, who are taking statements from people who were witnesses out on the street as well as those who were struck by bullets on early Sunday morning," Featherstone said.
