Five days after the resignation and conviction of former Ward 2 Councilwoman Angelique Lee, the Jackson City Council has set a date for a special election to fill the vacant seat.

In an unanimous vote, the council approved Tuesday, Oct. 1, as the date of the Ward 2 special election. If a run-off election is necessary, that date will be Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Since candidates have to qualify by petition at least 20 days before the election, that means they must have a petition of 50 qualified electors of Ward 2 signed and submitted to City Hall by 5 p.m. Sept. 11.

The candidates must be residents of Ward 2 and there is no qualifying fee. If only one person qualifies for the seat, they will be appointed as the Ward 2 councilperson. If no one qualifies, the mayor will fill the vacant Ward 2 seat.

The Municipal Clerk must publish in a newspaper the date of the special election once a week for three consecutive weeks before the special election date. Another notice will also be published at Jackson's City Hall.

The Ward 2 seat is vacant after former councilwoman Angelique Lee resigned on Wednesday. Hours later, Lee pleaded guilty in federal court on a charge of conspiracy to commit bribery. It was her first full-term as a councilwoman.
