CLEMSON — With Cade Klubnik weighing in at 210 pounds, it’s obvious No. 14 Clemson wants to feature its quarterback more in the running game.

Last year, the Tigers ran Klubnik at very selective times, which was primarily due to his 200-pound frame. The now junior gained 446 yards when he did run the football, which was 125 times. Keep in mind, he netted just 182 yards due mostly to sacks.

Some of those carries, however, were due to scrambles or being sacked. In total, Clemson allowed 29 sacks last season.

How much will the Tigers run Klubnik in 2024?

“That is to be determined,” Swinney said. “We are not going to tackle him in fall camp practice. I definitely think he is bigger, stronger and all of that stuff.”

Using Klubnik in the run game at times will be key for Clemson’s offense in 2024. Offensive coordinator Garrett Riley used the quarterback a lot in leading TCU to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in 2022.

Getting Klubnik involved in the running game more can take a lot of pressure off running back Phil Mafah, especially with Will Shipley now playing for the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL.

“He is just more experienced and has more confidence out there,” Swinney said about his quarterback. “I think that part of the game will come as he plays the season. I hope that will show up a little bit more whether it is finishing with the ball and not getting the ball knocked out.”

Klubnik led all FBS quarterbacks last year with six lost fumbles, almost half of what Clemson had as a team. Some of those came when he tried to break tackles. Swinney hopes putting on the extra weight and muscle will help Klubnik be better at those things.

“Those are the type things where you see, hopefully, some of his strength will show up,” Swinney said.

Clemson will continue fall practice at Jervey Meadows the next few days before hosting their first scrimmage of camp on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The scrimmage is closed to the public.
