Clemson might not play Georgia as often as they used to, but that doesn’t mean the two schools aren’t huge rivals.

The two campuses are less than 75 miles apart, they routinely battle one another on the recruiting trail and the two schools met almost every year from 1962 to 1987.

While they faced off four times in the 1990s, the two have only met five times since 1997, with the Dawgs winning four of those matchups. However, despite the two programs not meeting as often these days, it’s still a huge rivalry, and the Tigers are well-aware of what the season-opening matchup in Atlanta means to the fan base.

Add in the fact that it’s a matchup of teams ranked inside the Top 15, the game being played inside the state of Georgia, and Clemson is preparing for what is expected to be a raucous environment on August 31.

“We’ve been watching them for awhile now,” backup quarterback Chris Vizzina said after Tuesday’s practice. “But now we have turned the page and getting into Georgia. (Tuesday), just indoor, dealing with the noise. In Atlanta it is going to be really loud. Who knows what the split between the fans is going to be. But it’s going to be loud no matter what.”

The Georgia fight song was heard blaring from the Clemson Indoor Facility on Tuesday as the Tigers do what they can to emulate what they might experience inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

“It’s everything, who knows how the game is going to go,” Vizzina added. “First drive is probably going to be really loud. You got Georgia and Clemson, both great fan bases, both are going to be really loud and the whole game will be like that.”

The Tigers, who are currently 13.5 point underdogs, are looking for their first win in the series since 2013 and their first away from Death Valley since 1986.

“It’s Georgia,” said Vizzina. “They’re a great program with coach Smart and I have always respected them. They got great players just like us and our defense has been doing a really good just of just preparing us.”
