Swinney Has Message for Clemson Fans Ahead of Home Opener

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney had a message for Tiger fans during his Sunday evening Zoom conference call with the media.

Swinney knows Clemson fans are “disappointed” by how the Tigers started this season with Saturday’s 34-3 loss to Georgia.

But Swinney hopes to see the fan base get behind his team and show out in full force this Saturday when Clemson hosts its home opener and welcomes Appalachian State to Death Valley.

“It’s a night game in the Valley. I think we’ve got the best atmosphere in college football,” Swinney said. “I know our fans are disappointed from what happened Saturday. We all are. But man, we only get seven of these days, and it’s special to be able to get everybody together and play a game in the Valley.”

Clemson is 98-17-8 in home openers all-time, including home opener wins against App State in 1984, 1991 and 1997.

The Tigers are 5-0 all-time against App State, with the most recent win coming by a score of 41-10 win against the Mountaineers in 2015.

Saturday’s matchup at Memorial Stadium is set to kick off at 8 p.m. The game will be televised on ACC Network.

“We’ll be pumped up to get home,” Swinney said. “A lot of these guys (freshmen) playing their first home game. I’m excited to get out there and go compete again against a really, really good App team.”
