Swinney Asked If Sammy Brown Will Play More as Season Unfolds

Sammy Brown made his college debut on special teams in Clemson’s season opener against Georgia on Saturday, though he did not log a snap on defense in the contest.

During his radio show Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked about Brown and if the highly touted true freshman linebacker will play more as the season goes along.

“Oh yeah,” Swinney said. “Every down was kind of like life or death it seemed like the other day. So, we’ve got to continue to bring him along. He played special teams and all that, and I think we only ended up playing three backers. But he’ll definitely have plenty more opportunity as we go through the season.”

A former five-star prospect, Brown enrolled at Clemson back in January as a consensus top-35 national recruit in the 2024 class. The 6-foot-2, 235-pounder quickly showed off his potential in the Tigers’ April spring game, when he posted a game-high-tying eight tackles (six solo), a tackle for loss and a sack.

The 2023 High School Butkus Award Winner, given annually to the nation’s top linebacker, Brown starred on both sides of the ball at Jefferson (Ga.) High School as a linebacker/running back. As a senior, he amassed 153 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, three blocked kicks and two interceptions on defense. Offensively, he racked up 2,289 rushing yards and scored 40 touchdowns overall.
