During his Zoom conference call with the media Monday evening, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave the latest on the status of star defensive lineman Peter Woods.

Woods was injured in the first half of the Tigers’ 66-20 win over App State on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. The sophomore went down after a chop block below the knees in the second quarter.

Woods was slow to get up off the field before limping off under his own power and going into the injury tent to be evaluated by the medical staff. He eventually came out of the medical tent, and then later came back onto the field after halftime with a brace on his left knee.

Following Saturday’s game, Swinney said of Woods, “I think he’s okay, but we’ll see tomorrow when we do a more thorough check,” and Swinney added that it seemed like “most of the things that we were really concerned about was okay.”

On Monday evening, Swinney provided an injury update on Woods.

“He’ll be day to day,” Swinney said.

Woods’ injury in the App State game came on the heels of his impressive performance in Clemson’s season opener vs. Georgia on Aug. 31, when he posted a career-high 2.5 tackles for loss, including his first career sack, among his six tackles against the Bulldogs.

A 2023 freshman All-American and 2024 preseason All-American, Woods entered this season credited with 27 tackles (2.5 for loss) and a forced fumble in 307 snaps over 12 games (two starts). As a true freshman last season, he was also credited with 10 quarterback pressures, the most of any Tiger defensive tackle.

The 6-foot-3, 315-pounder joined Clemson as ESPN’s No. 4 overall prospect for 2023 after winning four straight state titles in Alabama.

Following an open date this Saturday, Clemson will return to Death Valley for its ACC opener against NC State on Saturday, Sept. 21.
