Swinney Fully Embracing Revenue Sharing, Says Clemson Will Be in 'Great Spot'

Dabo Swinney is openly embracing the big changes that are on the horizon.

Starting as early as next season, revenue sharing is expected to come to college football due to the House settlement. Right now schools can not directly pay student-athletes, with any monies going to players having to come through NIL deals and collectives, which means a lot of fundraising.

As it stands today, schools will have somewhere in the neighborhood of $22 million annually to distribute to players, something head coach Dabo Swinney believes will be a game-changer for his program.

“We’re going to be in a great spot when the rev-share starts,” Swinney said during his radio show Monday. “I think that’s going to be the best case for us. We have the money here, but right now, you can’t share the money that you have. You have to go and raise it. That’s a challenge. It just is. And the rev share really won’t start until July 1.”

However, until the settlement is official, the status quo remains, meaning Clemson will have to lean on the 110 Society for the financial support.

“These next ten months or so, we’ve got to do a great job of supporting the NIL aspect,” Swinney added. “Making sure that we can do a great job with just being competitive with the kids that are on our roster and the kids that we’re recruiting.”

College football has seen a massive shift in recent years. With the advent of NIL, money is a factor for almost every player these days. Even the high school recruits. Strong cultures still appeal to some, but the money part is also important.

While Swinney fully believes that the new model that features revenue sharing will help Clemson remain competitive on the national level, the Tigers still have to be able to compete until that day arrives.

“Because that is definitely a factor for sure,” Swinney said. “It is not always THE factor. For some, it’s the factor, but it’s not always the factor. If it’s just the factor, we’re probably not going to get them. If it’s A factor, as I’ve said many times, we’re very competitive. But it’s a challenge, because it’s fundraising. There’s a lot of stuff going on.

“I think it’s going to be a much better situation when the rev-share gets here. I think that’s going to be a great thing for sure because we’ll be able to compete with anybody out there.”
