CLEMSON — During his weekly radio show on Monday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney addressed the spot the Tigers will be in once rev-sharing comes into play in college athletics.

Starting as early as next season, revenue sharing is expected to come to college football due to the House settlement. Right now schools cannot directly pay student-athletes, with any monies going to players having to come through NIL deals and collectives, which means a lot of fundraising.

As it stands today, schools will have somewhere in the neighborhood of $22 million annually to distribute to players, something head coach Dabo Swinney believes will be a game-changer for his program.

During his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Swinney was asked several follow-up questions on his comments from Monday night.

Why do you think Clemson is in a better situation with rev-sharing?

“You do not have to raise the money. You can’t share with anybody what you have right now, you have to go raise the money. That is hard. So, it is going to be a way better situation for sure. It brings more clarity for everybody because everybody has the same amount of rev-share. That is going to be a real positive for us. Again, we have the money, but we will be able to legally share it which will be great for us and great for the players. It will be awesome.”

How much clarity do you have that you can share with recruits?

“Not full clarity because there are still some things. We have a meeting this Thursday. We have an idea where we think it is headed. In December or January, we will have pretty good clarity because once we know what the number is then it is kind of up to each school on how you divide it up and share it. We will have clarity on that once it is a finality.”

You said the fundraising piece is a challenge. Is that specific to Clemson?

“It is hard for everybody. Again, you are going to the same donors. Again, the money is there, but you can’t use it and then you have to go get more money for that. It is hard for everybody.”

To clarify, you will be willing to use it for recruiting purposes?

“You have to use it for recruiting purposes. That is the great thing about it. You have to use it. If you don’t use it, you are going to be in trouble. It is basically a part of the scholarship, but how you divide it up can change year to year based on your team, how veteran your team is or how young team is, so everybody uses it in recruiting. NIL is used in recruiting.”

How much has conversation changed with the families in recruiting? How quickly do they get the money part of the conversation?

“It is just a part of the process. It is no different than it has ever been. It is just another part of the process.”

If NIL is still around who is to say that more of the flush schools out there will still have some of the same advantages plus the settlement?

“To be determined. There are some things to be ironed out on that side of it. I do not think it will ever go away, but you will see a little bit more normalizing of the NIL once you get into the rev-share.”
