Herbstreit: Clemson ‘The Forgotten Team’ in ACC Title Hunt

During a College GameDay segment Saturday morning, ESPN’s lead college football analyst, Kirk Herbstreit, gave his thoughts on the ACC and who he sees as the three frontrunners in the conference title race right now.

Those teams, in Herbstreit’s view, are No. 7 Miami, No. 15 Louisville and No. 17 Clemson.

And as Herbstreit sees it, the Tigers are the “forgotten team” in the ACC title hunt.

“The last time Miami finished in the top 10 at the end of a season in college football, 2003. Think about that. Over 20 years ago was the last time,” Herbstreit said. “But they’ve got a quarterback, so they’ve got a chance and they’re believing. Louisville, big game with Notre Dame. No one ever talks about them. Still right in the mix. They have some big games coming up. Really they don’t play anybody. They have one ranked team left on their schedule.

“And the forgotten team is Clemson. Look at their schedule. Tell me a game that they’re going to be an underdog. So, this ACC race I think is still open. But those are the three right now in a pole position.”

Clemson (2-1, 1-0 ACC) is set to host Stanford at 7 p.m. tonight at Death Valley (ESPN), while Louisville (3-0, 1-0) plays at No. 16 Notre Dame at 3:30 p.m. today. Miami (5-0, 1-0) survived at home against Virginia Tech, 38-34, on Friday night to stay undefeated.

According to ESPN analytics, Miami has the best chance to make the ACC title game at 63 percent, followed by Clemson at 44 percent and Louisville at 35 percent.

Clemson doesn’t face Miami during the regular season but will play Louisville at Death Valley on Nov. 2.
