Does ‘Pretty Frustrated’ Lawrence Feel like He’s in a Rut?

The frustration is mounting for former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars, who remain winless through four games this season after their loss to the Houston Texans this past Sunday, when reserve running back Dare Ogunbowale scored on a 1-yard touchdown reception with 18 seconds left to give the Texans a 24-20 win at home.

Lawrence, who went 18-of-33 passing for 169 yards and two touchdowns, met with the media after the game and gave his evaluation of his performance.

“I’m pretty frustrated,” he said. “Like I said, a lot of missed opportunities. So, like I said, it’s kind of what’s been happening the past few weeks and weren’t able to overcome it today. The guys fought hard, and obviously we gave everything we had and had a chance at the end.”

“It’s a team game, but at the end of the day, I felt like I left a lot out there (Sunday),” he added. “I’m pretty frustrated with that.”

The Jaguars held a lead for a lot of the second half after they went ahead 20-17 on Lawrence’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk at the 6:16 mark of the third quarter. Ultimately, though, they fell to 0-4 for the first time since 2021, when Jacksonville began the season with five consecutive losses.

“We just have to keep playing. We’ve got to stay together,” Lawrence said. “It’s been tough obviously not having the success that we want, and just a lot of guys in there that put a lot of time in, coaches and players, and really everyone that works with the team. So, it’s frustrating, it’s hard.

“But when you have some adversity, you’ve got to get through it to get to the other side of it, and it will help you in the long run. That’s what we’re preaching as a team, is just it’s frustrating it’s not going our way and we weren’t able to find a way to win this game, we had some mistakes out there, yeah, but we just have to stay together. It’s gonna teach us something, it’s gonna prepare us for the future, and stay positive.”

Through four games this season, Lawrence has completed 53.3 percent of his passes for 729 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. The 2021 No. 1 overall pick has also rushed for 61 yards on eight carries.

Lawrence, who has lost nine straight starts dating back to last season, was asked if he feels like he’s in a rut or slump right now.

“No, I don’t feel that way,” he said. “I felt great coming into (Sunday’s) game. Like I said, I felt like our plan was really good. I felt prepared. I had a lot of opportunities, and it’s football. Sometimes you don’t hit all those shots, and I expect to, though, because I know I need to do that. And you’re not going to hit them all, but you’ve got to hit more than I did (Sunday).

“So, I’ve got to be better for my teammates, and I understand that and I put a lot on myself to do that, and I got faith that it’ll happen and I’m going to start playing like I know I can. But I’ve just got to keep working. I put the time, put the work in. I don’t think anybody can question that.”

Up next for the Jaguars is a home matchup against the Indianapolis Colts (2-2) this Sunday.
