Norvell Says Florida State Offense Needs to Be 'On Point' Against Clemson

CLEMSON – Florida State is set to host No. 14 Clemson on Saturday with redshirt freshman Brock Glenn set to make just his third career start at quarterback.

Glenn started in the ACC Championship win over Louisville last season and then in the blowout loss to Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

Now after sitting behind former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei for the first five games, Glenn is now inserted in into the starting lineup in what is arguably one of the Seminoles’ toughest tests of the season.

“Now playing probably one of the better teams in the country,” Mike Norvell said earlier this week. “But he’s built for it.”

The head coach knows his young quarterback will face some challenges against a Clemson defense that features a lot of talent.

“I mean, they’re talented. They’re talented at all levels,” Norvell said. “I mean, I think the defensive line, the forcing unit… they’ve got Barrett Carter, one of the best linebackers in the country. He does a really good job sideline-to-sideline, blitzing. Their defensive front is very impactful. They’ve got some really good players there.”

Florida State’s offense has seen its share of struggles during the 1-4 start. The Seminoles are averaging less than 300 yards of total offense per contest and just 65.2 rushing yards per game.

The big play has all but disappeared, evidenced by the offense gaining just 4.7 yards per play. Trying to hit on some of those in the passing game won’t get any easier on Saturday, as the Tigers’ secondary will present a challenge.

If Florida State is going to have any shot at pulling off the upset win, Norvell knows his pass-catchers are going to have to win some one-on-one battles, something his receivers have struggled with at times this season.

“In the secondary, you have guys that have great range,” Norvell said. “They’re going to play man coverage. They’re going to mix different looks in zone. You’ve got to be on point and you’ve got to be efficient in operation. And when you get your one-on-ones, you’ve got to go fight to go win the one-on-one.”
