Georgia Lineman Calls Recent Clemson Visit 'Unreal'

CLEMSON – A big offensive lineman returned to Clemson recently.

2027 prospect Carter Mathis (Gainesville, GA) visited for the NC State game after having also attended Dabo Swinney’s high school camp back in June.

The 6-foot-7, 280-pound high school sophomore, who also goes by the nickname “Big Red,” had a memorable experience while on campus.

“The facilities are great,” Mathis told The Clemson Insider. “The personalities of the coaching staff and all the recruiting personnel. And just the atmosphere as a whole at Clemson is unreal.”

Mathis goes to the same high school as former Clemson standout Deshaun Watson, one reason he feels drawn to Swinney’s program. Another reason is offensive line coach Matt Luke.

“He seems like a really genuine guy,” Mathis said. “He is always the same person.”

Mathis has watched a lot of Clemson football the last several years, and he sees a noticeable improvement in the Tigers’ play up front this season.

“I feel like the offensive line this year, I feel like it’s better than it was last year,” he said. “Because of the games that I had watched, it feels like the run game is better. Always a telltale sign of the offensive line blocking is the run totals. Especially, the way they played NC State. They shut down their entire pass rush and the run lanes were open.”

Mathis has also visited South Carolina this season. However, with him just being a sophomore, his recruitment is really just now getting started.

As he goes through the process, one of his goals is to earn an offer from Clemson. He plans to be back at camp next summer, when the coaches will start offering kids in his class, to do just that.

“It would mean a whole lot,” Mathis said. “Clemson is definitely in my top three places that I want to go to college. I really like the way coach Swinney coaches. Coach Swinney and my high school head coach went to Alabama together. You can tell they share some of the same values and their coaching styles are really similar. It just seems like there is more togetherness from the team and the brotherhood. I really like the culture.”
