An arrest has been made in the murder of Diondre Overton.

This week, North Carolina police (Guilford County Sheriff’s Office) announced that 20-year-old Jeremiah Diago Blanks has been arrested and charged with felony first degree murder in the shooting death of Overton, who was 26 years old.

The former Clemson wide receiver unexpectedly passed away on Sept. 7 when he was shot trying to break up a fight during a party in his hometown of Greensboro, N.C.

Following is an excerpt from a WFMY News 2 (Greensboro) article on the arrest being made in the murder investigation:

Jeremiah Diago Blanks, 20, is currently in the custody of the Oakland County Jail in Pontiac, Michigan, pending extradition after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Detectives detained Blanks in Michigan on Tuesday with help of the U.S. Marshals Service, according to a press release.

During a press conference Wednesday, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office revealed new details in the case.

Deputies confirmed the location of the party was an Airbnb at the time of the party. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said the home was under a sublease and the owner was not aware at the time of the Airbnb status.

The family of Diondre Overton spoke during the press conference.

“Dre truly was an outstanding young man. This is really hard for us.”

On Sept. 7, deputies responded to a call regarding a noise disturbance at a loud house party on Spring Mill Road in Greensboro. While on their way to the scene, deputies said they received updated information indicating that a shooting had occurred.

When deputies arrived, they found Overton suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, Overton died at the scene at just 26 years old.

The Clemson football team honored Overton prior to the Appalachian State game on Sept. 7, as it had Trent Pearman and Rob Billings run down the hill by themselves prior to kickoff. They both wear the same No. 14 jersey Overton wore during his playing days at Clemson.

A two-time national champion and four-time ACC champion, Overton played more than 1,000 career snaps at Clemson across the 2016-19 seasons, collecting 52 career receptions for 777 yards and seven touchdowns over 51 games with five starts. He went on to play professionally in the USFL, recording 42 catches for 533 yards and five touchdowns for the Philadelphia Stars over the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
