Fossil Ridge takes 2nd in Class 5A, Windsor golfer finishes runner-up in state championships

The Colorado high school girls golf state championships are in the books with plenty of strong local finishes.

Fossil Ridge grabbed runner-up honors in Class 5A, a Windsor golfer placed second in Class 4A and a Timnath freshman finished among the 3A top five during the two-day stroke play events.

Here's a look at how all 11 Fort Collins-area golfers fared at the state tournaments held around Colorado this week:

Fossil Ridge takes runner-up in Class 5A

The SaberCats capped off a sensational spring season with a second-place team finish in the 5A state tournament at the Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield.

Two SaberCats (Abbi Beld and Ellie Barry) earned top-10 finishes while Fossil's final-round team score of 14-over 230 moved them from fourth place into the runner-up spot.

Beld made three birdies in the second round to shoot a solid 1-over 73 and put her into a tie for sixth.

The SaberCats swept Front Range League and regional team titles this season, with Beld also winning the individual regional crown.

Here are the final Fossil Ridge results from 5A state:

• Abbi Beld: Finished +7 overall (T-6th) with rounds of 78 and 73
• Ellie Barry: Finished +9 overall (10th) with rounds of 76 and 77
• Richa Sajjan: Finished +19 overall (T-23rd) with rounds of 83 and 80
• Cailin Lowdermilk: Finished +47 overall (59th) with rounds of 92 and 99

Team standings: Fossil Ridge finished runner-up with a two-day team score of 467 (+35), losing to winner Valor Christian by 25 shots but beating third-place finisher Rock Canyon by three strokes.

Rocky Mountain also had one golfer in action in Class 5A:

• Samantha Orr: Finished +36 overall (T-46th) with rounds of 88 and 92

Windsor golfer vaults to 2nd at 4A state

Windsor junior Macy Kleve already had two straight top-10 finishes at the Class 4A state tournament and just keeps ascending.

The Wizards' golfer fired the best round of the day (by three shots) with a second-round 1-over 72 to rise all the way into a tie for second place in the Class 4A state tournament at Colorado Springs' Country Club of Colorado.

Kleve made a whopping six birdies Tuesday, including four on the back nine alone. That helped her overcome a tough first round, when she shot a 15-over 86.

She ultimately finished 16 shots back of runaway winner Logan Hale of Erie. Windsor finished fourth as a team with a two-day score of 540 (+94)

Here's how all three Windsor golfers fared:

• Macy Kleve: Finished +16 overall (T-2nd) with rounds of 86 and 72
• Alexandra Strohman: Finished +48 overall (T-36th) with rounds of 96 and 94
• Allison Sanger: Finished +50 overall (T-41st) with rounds of 90 and 102

Timnath golfer finishes 4th in 3A tournament

Timnath golfer CheyAnne Schrick burst onto the scene this spring with a strong freshman season.

After sharing a Class 3A regional title last week, she was equally impressive in the state tournament at the Olde Course in Loveland, tying for fourth place with a two-day score of 15-over 159.

Schrick fired a 6-over 78 in Tuesday's final round to inch up the leaderboard after an opening-round 81.

She finished nine shots behind Prospect Ridge's Hope Torres, who won a playoff over St. Mary's Academy's Maddy Bante.

Here are the results for all Timnath and Liberty Common state participants:

• CheyAnne Schrick (Timnath): Finished +15 overall (T-4th) with rounds of 81 and 78
• Corah Clemmer (Liberty Common): Finished +55 overall (48th) with rounds of 96 and 103
• Keira Black (Liberty Common): Finished +63 overall (T-59th) with rounds of 106 and 101
