Update: Crews extinguish small grass fire in lower Poudre Canyon

Firefighters were able to extinguish a small vegetation fire just south of Gateway Natural Area in the lower Poudre Canyon on Wednesday.

Roosevelt National Forest spokesperson Marya Washburn said forest service crews were able to fully contain the 1.5-acre fire at 2:38 p.m. The fire was first reported at 10:07 a.m.

She said initial reports estimated the fire at 3 acres but better mapping placed it at 1.5 acres.

She said the fire is believed to have been ignited by lightning that caused grass on a hillside to smolder. The fire was located a half-mile south of Gateway Natural Area on a ridge south of Colorado Highway 14.

Gateway Natural Area is located about 15 miles northwest of Fort Collins.

She said about 10 forest service firefighters worked the fire and a helicopter was available but wasn't needed.

No structures were threatened.
