Second Northern Colorado life jacket loaner station opens at Windsor lake

Windsor became the second Northern Colorado community to have its own life jacket loaner station this summer.

The station, which loans free life jackets on a first-come, first-served basis and operates on the honor system, was installed at the south end of the Windsor Lake swim beach in July, according to the town of Windsor.

It is one of two life jacket stations installed in Northern Colorado with the help of Drennen's Dreams Foundation , a Colorado-based drowning prevention and water safety nonprofit named for Drennen O'Melia, a 12-year-old boy who drowned in a Centennial country club pool in 2010.

The organization's first life jacket loaner station was added to Boyd Lake in Loveland last summer.

Besides loaning free life jackets to Windsor Laker recreators, the station also seeks to educate the public about the importance of life jackets and how to properly wear them, according to the town of Windsor.
