Colorado denies that Deion Sanders requires son Shedeur's song to be played after touchdowns

Deion Sanders ’ hiring at Colorado brought with it an overhaul of the identity of the Buffs’ football program. A school with a national championship in the past 40 years is known by many in the football world now as the home of the Pro Football Hall of Famer who has dubbed himself “Coach Prime.”

Even those wholesale changes apparently have limits, though.

In a postgame analysis of the Buffs’ loss last Saturday to Nebraska, DenverSports.com reported that Sanders has instructed Colorado’s band not to play the school’s fight song, “Fight CU,” after Sanders’ son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders scores a touchdown so that the loudspeakers at Folsom Field can instead play the younger Sanders’ song, “Perfect Timing.”

The university’s athletic department has refuted the report , noting in a statement that it is “not true,” though the statement acknowledges that Sanders’ single is played after he’s part of a touchdown.

"Nobody ever asked the band to refrain from playing the fight song,” the statement read. “After a touchdown, the band plays 'Glory, Glory, Colorado' and after a point after touchdown, the band plays 'Fight CU,' as has been standard practice for years.

“When Shedeur Sanders scores, the band will wait a moment for a small snippet of Shedeur's song to play before immediately kicking into 'Glory, Glory, Colorado. This is exactly what happened during the game against North Dakota State. This practice is not unique to Shedeur, as the band will wait a moment after a successful field goal to play Alejandro Mata's song before playing 'Fight CU.'"

Shedeur Sanders released the song, his first single, in May, following in the footsteps of his father, who released an album, “Prime Time,” in 1994 in the middle of his legendary NFL career.

Against the Cornhuskers , Sanders’ team was battered in both a figurative and literal sense.

In a 28-10 loss, the Buffs were outgained by a 213-112 margin on their way to a 28-point halftime deficit. They finished the game with just 16 rushing yards between five different ball-carriers. By the end of the game, they were banged up, too, with Sanders’ other son of the roster, safety Shilo Sanders , suffering a forearm injury that required surgery and Shedeur Sanders exiting the game early, if only to avoid the potential for injury on a night in which his porous offensive line allowed six sacks.

The elder Sanders is 5-9 early in his second season at Colorado, which will travel to Fort Collins Saturday to face rival Colorado State. After a 3-0 start to last season, the Buffs are 2-9 in their past 11 games.
