Fossil Ridge football QB named Fort Collins-area Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week

This week's Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week award was all about rivalry domination.

Fossil Ridge football player Nick Kubat took top honors in the Fort Collins area for Sept. 23-28 after accounting for six touchdowns in a Harmony Cup blowout win over Fort Collins.

The SaberCats quarterback was 22 of 25 passing for 351 yards with three touchdowns, including a highlight-reel fumble-turned-touchdown pass to Owen Wind in a 28-point second quarter.

Kubat also ran for three touchdowns, part of a five-touchdown first half in a Homecoming rout.

The 42-point win was the largest margin of victory in 14 all-time meetings between the Sabercats and Lambkins .

The senior QB has now accounted for 17 touchdowns and over 1,300 yards of offense at the season's halfway point.

This is the second time Kubat has earned Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week honors, also winning it last October for another city rivalry performance vs. Poudre.

He joins Timnath girls cross country runner Izzy Schimmelpfennig and Cubs' volleyball player Aubrianna Gerdes as the award's only two-time winners (athletes are only eligible once per sports season).

Fossil football fans showed out, giving Kubat the majority (58.2%) of a football-heavy vote.

That ultimately earned him Athlete of the Week over these other outstanding nominees :

• Cash Altschwager, Wellington football (runner-up with 37.5%)
• Lindsey Kaines, Rocky Mountain girls cross country
• Jack McGuirk, Fort Collins boys soccer
• Molli Magana, Windsor softball

The Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week series features five nominees every Monday, with voting at Coloradoan.com until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday and the winner named on Thursday.
