Individuals and businesses hurt by the tornadoes that struck western and central Ohio on March 14 are getting extra time to file their federal tax returns and make tax payments.

Those taxpayers now until Sept. 3 to file their returns and make tax payments, the Internal Revenue Service said Thursday.

Individuals and households who live or have a business in Auglaize, Crawford, Darke, Delaware, Hancock, Licking, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Richland and Union counties qualify for the delay, the agency said.

The delay applies to such things as tax returns and payments that were due on April 15, contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts, and quarterly estimated income tax payments due on April 15 and June 17.

Taxpayers don't have to contact the IRS to get relief. The IRS does it automatically.
