Lawn care company LawnStarter recently inspected 303 U.S. cities much like a mother would check a child's room for cleanliness and ranked them in the company's 2024 Dirtiest Cities in America list. Ohio cities like Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo and Akron made it on the list but weren't featured near the top.

LawnStarter ranked the cities using 21 metrics grouped into four main categories, pollution, living conditions, infrastructure and resident dissatisfaction. Each city was given a rating out of 100 in each of these categories, and the average score across each category determined the city's overall rank. Each city was also ranked in each individual category.

The study's detailed methodology is available on LawnStarter's website .
