Columbus police officer pleads guilty to misdemeanor, domestic violence charge dropped

A Columbus police officer pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge Monday, getting credit for time served, and having a domestic violence charge dismissed.

Brandon Herren, 36, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct on Monday in Franklin County Municipal Court. He was initially charged with aggravated menacing and domestic violence.

As part of Herren's plea, the aggravated menacing charge was amended to disorderly conduct, and the domestic violence charge was dropped.

Judge Eileen Paley sentenced Herren, a Columbus police officer since 2022, to time served and suspended a $150 fine.

Court records say Columbus police received a call in April from an apartment complex on the Far West Side for a follow-up to an earlier domestic violence report. Officers met with a woman who said Herren had threatened her and another man that morning.

A recording from the woman, provided to police, included the phone conversation where Herren reportedly made a threat, court records say. Officers recognized Herren's voice.

Following his arrest, the Columbus police department suspended Herren with pay. An update on Herren's status with the department was not immediately available Monday.
