Heat forces central Ohio high schools to delay Week 2 football kickoff times

Amid a late-summer heat wave , some central Ohio high schools are pushing back kickoff times for Friday’s football games .

Games generally kick off at 7 p.m., but a number are being moved to 7:30 or 8 p.m. in hopes of mitigating the impact of temperatures hovering in the low- to mid-90s.

Forecast highs are in the mid-90s Friday, the fifth consecutive day of such heat across Ohio and much of the Midwest.

Schools are encouraged to report adjusted kickoff times to The Dispatch.

Some districts also pushed back events Tuesday and Wednesday, including varsity soccer games, and canceled or postponed contests at both varsity and sub-varsity levels in various sports.

Wednesday's five OCC boys golf tournaments and the OCC-Capital girls tournament have been trimmed to nine holes from 18, according to commissioner Steve Petros.
