Cris Carter on Jeremiah Smith: 'I pray he smashes all my records' as Ohio State freshman

    By Colin Gay, Columbus Dispatch,

    2024-09-09

Former Ohio State football and Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter is seemingly accepting that one of his Buckeye football records could be up for grabs.

In 1984, Carter caught eight touchdown receptions, more than any other freshman in Ohio State history. Freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has three touchdown catches for the Buckeyes in his first two games, making him tied with Marvin Harrison Jr. for fifth-most by an Ohio State freshman in program history.

Not only is Carter accepting that his record could be broken. It's something he's praying for.

"After 40 years of holding the record," Carter wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sunday, "I pray he smashes all my records."

But Carter did give a caveat.

"Just (a) lil reminder, my Buckeyes ran the football 45-50 times a game," Carter wrote.

As a freshman, Carter and the Buckeyes finished 9-3 and ranked No. 13 in the final AP poll. Ohio State lost the Rose Bowl 20-17 against USC.

Carter finished with a team-leading 8 touchdowns on 41 catches and 648 receiving yards.

Through two games, Smith has 11 catches for 211 yards and three touchdown receptions.

Ohio State will play Marshall Sept. 21 at Ohio Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon on FOX.
