You may have missed seeing the northern lights , but at least you're guaranteed to see the hunter's moon this month when you look out the window. Here's what to know about October's full moon.

    When is October's full moon?

According to Space.com , October's full moon will be visible on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7:26 a.m. ET. A full moon occurs when the moon's disk is fully visible, reflecting the Sun's light.

Why is October's full moon called the Hunter's Moon?

Every month has a special full moon, named after something significant during the month, thanks to the Native Americans. July had a buck moon, August had the sturgeon moon, and September had a harvest moon, according to the Farmer's Almanac .

Native American tribes gave each full moon a unique name to keep track of the seasons, according to Almanac.com .

The October full moon was named the hunter's moon by Algonquin Native American tribes, which "signified it was time to go hunting in preparation for winter," according to AccuWeather . It also signified that many game animals begin their hunting during autumn.

Four planets will be visible to the naked eye, depending on where you live

Joined by the hunter's moon will be four planets: Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, according to Space.com. They will all rise in the hours before or after the full moon rises.

Why is it called a supermoon?

According to Space.com, supermoon isn't really an astronomical term. It describes the moon's proximity to the Earth, known as reaching perigee.

During supermoons, the full moon appears 10% bigger than a usual full moon.

When is the next full moon, in November 2024?

November's full moon, the beaver moon, should attain peak illumination by Friday, November 15.
