    Forecasters are keeping a close eye on the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season , with just seven weeks left of it. Hurric a ne Helene and Hurricane Milton have impacted the lives of many, with their damaging winds and heavy rain creating severe damage.

    With two treacherous hurricanes in a row and nearly two months left until the hurricane season ends , could we expect another hurricane to hit the United States? Here’s what to know.

    Are there any hurricanes after Milton?

    On Wednesday, Tropical Storm Nadine formed off of Florida’s east coast while Milton made landfall in the Sunshine State—but according to a story by USA Today , Nadine fizzled out before it could turn into a hurricane.

    Currently, Hurricane Leslie is brewing in the Atlantic with winds of nearly 105 mph, far from land—and it’s expected to stay there for a few days instead of reaching US shores. It is the seventh hurricane of the season.

    There are no hurricanes expected to reach the U.S. for now.

    How many storms happen during hurricane season?

    A typical hurricane season, lasting from June 1 to Nov. 30, has 14 storms. There have been 13 hurricanes so far during the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

    The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is above-normal

    By one measurement, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has been more active than usual, according to Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University.

    "The 2024 Atlantic #hurricane season is now above-average for all parameters that CSU forecasts," he wrote on X on Oct. 9. "The season has been most above average for stronger storm activity (e.g., hurricanes and major hurricanes than for named storms)."

    "The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has now generated 127 ACE (Accumulated Cyclone Energy), officially meeting NOAA's definition of an above-normal season," Klotzbach said on X Wednesday.

    ACE is a metric that includes storm frequency, intensity and duration.
