Competing in its fifth consecutive Division III state tournament , the Newark Catholic boys golf team will look to improve its position in the second and final round Saturday at NorthStar in Sunbury.

The Green Wave are tied for eighth with Youngstown Mooney (335) after the first round Friday. Sugarcreek Garaway (325) leads the 12-team field.

Brogan Sullivan led Newark Catholic with a 76, tying him for ninth place. Charlie Doehring (81), Carter Hahn (88), Bobby Kieber (90) and Alex Nagel (90) rounded out the lineup.

The Green Wave are coming off back-to-back state runner-up finishes after placing third in 2021 and sixth in 2020.

Centerburg’s Bennett Hill, the Central District’s individual qualifier, is tied for fourth (74) behind leader Cameron Phillips (66) of Lucasville Valley.

Hill, a senior, is competing in his first state tournament.

“The 66 has to come back to the field,” Centerburg coach Nate Altizer said. “Tomorrow is about the same thing we had today. Our goal for Bennett was to be around even par and he was 2-over. We’ll go in tomorrow with about the same mindset. Try to get in there around even par and see what happens.”
