MLB team punished after violating bizarre rule

The Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels thought they would play a normal baseball game on Wednesday. Shame on them if so. Baseball is never normal.

In the second inning, A’s infielder Max Schuemann ripped an extra-base hit to left-center field. The Angels attempted to retrieve the ball and get it back in before the A’s could plate home a run. Not only did the Halos not do that, they couldn’t relay the ball back before two runs came across to score.

    …Or so everyone thought.

It turns out that the A’s violated a bizarre rule, which wound up taking a run off the board.

Infielder Armando Alvarez came around to score on the hit from Schumann. But when Kyle McCann went to cross home plate, McCann stumbled. And he wound up missing the plate. When Alvarez came in contact with McCann, the umpire ruled interference and thus called him out.

The A’s attempted to challenge the ruling but the ruling was upheld and confirmed.

You truly never know what you’re going to see at a Major League Baseball game. For the A’s, it has to be brutal, especially when Alvarez was just trying to help his teammate stay on his feet.

Perfect call by the umpire. Once the leader run crossed home plate he is out of the play. When the second runner missed home plate and was touched by the lead runner and directed back to touch home plate he is called out.
