Most of the time, missing a field goal means losing out on three points. Occasionally, though, it’s a lot worse. That was the case for the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders in Friday’s game against the Montreal Alouettes.

Nursing a 17-13 lead early in the fourth quarter, the Roughriders sent kicker Brett Lauther out to try a 38-yard field goal. Lauther, who had already missed a pair of kicks, missed his third of the game as the ball sailed wide right.

    The play was not over.

Montreal’s James Letcher Jr. fielded the missed kick and returned it for an Alouttes touchdown. No Saskatchewan player even managed to touch Letcher during his 128-yard return.

Understandably, the play generated a lot of excitement.

Saskatchewan bounced back well from there, regaining the lead later in the quarter. But ultimately, Montreal had the last laugh. With 30 seconds left, the Alouettes went back ahead on another impressive run, a 15-yard scramble from quarterback Davis Alexander.

That proved to be the game-winning touchdown. Saskatchewan got Lauther in position to attempt a game-tying 48-yard field goal. But his attempt sailed wide , sealing the game for Montreal.
