Jerry Jones discusses CeeDee Lamb situation

The Dallas Cowboys went on the road on Saturday, taking on the Las Vegas Raiders in the second preseason game for both teams. Before the game, Jerry Jones did an interview on the Cowboys broadcast.

During his interview, Jones addressed CeeDee Lamb, Dallas’ star receiver who’s been a training camp holdout while seeking a long-term contract.

“You never know,” Jones said. “You have together and you have to get together on a number. I don’t know a number and he doesn’t know a number. So we’ve gotta get that done.”

Jones also praised Lamb’s offseason work and found the positive in Lamb being away from the team during training camp and the preseason.

“I do want to emphasize he did such great preparation and work with Dak in the offseason. We know CeeDee. We know what we’re doing. It has been a great opportunity to see these young receivers step up. And have they gotten a chance to excel? So all in all, this is not bad.”

The second part of Jones’ comments makes a lot of sense. Whenever a star player is away, younger players have a chance to get reps that they otherwise might not have gotten. But not even having a number in mind? That’s a little more troublesome for the Cowboys.

While Jones has previously noted that he doesn’t feel a lot of urgency to get Lamb’s contract done, Lamb has been one of the best, most explosive receivers in the league since he was drafted in 2020. Getting him in camp and ready for the regular season is — or should be — a top priority for the Cowboys.
