San Diego Padres starter Joe Musgrove will undergo Tommy John surgery, the team’s general manager A.J. Preller said on Friday.

He will be out for the remainder of the postseason as the Padres head to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers for the National League Division Series.

Musgrove exited Wednesday’s wild-card game against the Atlanta Braves in the fourth inning when catcher Kyle Higashioka noticed something going on in his right elbow.

“I’m frustrated, I don’t know what the future looks like for me right now, Musgrove said following the game, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com . “But I know I’m going to give it every chance I have, and I’ll do whatever I’ve got to do to get back in there at some point.”

He added his arm didn’t feel great at the beginning of the start.

Musgrove had multiple injury list stints during the regular season due to his right elbow.

He managed to get 19 starts in 2024 boasting a 3.88 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings.

Tommy John takes over a year to recover from so this likely means the 31-year-old is out for the 2025 season.

    Musgrove signed a five-year, $100-million contract extension in 2022.

For the remainder of the postseason, the Padres announced on Friday that Dylan Cease will get the start for Game 1 of the NLDS against the Dodgers. Michael King and Yu Darvish are the mainstays in that rotation and should get the nod for Games 2 and 3. Martín Pérez or Matt Waldron are options as well.
