Week 1 of the 2024 TSSAA football season included several exciting results , with some of the top teams in the Memphis area facing off in non-region contests.

Here is The Commercial Appeal's ranking of the top 10 high school football teams in the Memphis area headed into Week 2.

    1. Houston (1-0): The reigning 6A state champion won its 13th straight game with a 45-3 win over visiting Briarcrest. All-state quarterback Chandler Day threw two touchdowns and ran for two TDs. The Mustangs appear to be picking up right where they left off. Last week: No. 1 This week: at Desoto Central.

    2. Southwind (1-0): The offense exploded in the Jaguars' 69-0 victory over Ridgeway. Junior quarterback Kelvin Perkins threw for four touchdowns on just 16 pass attempts. He also rushed for a TD. Last week: No. 2 This week: vs. Horn Lake.

    3. Bartlett (1-0): Bartlett avenged its blowout loss to Memphis University School in Week 1 last season with a 41-17 victory over the Owls on Friday. All-state running back Geron Johnson scored five touchdowns in the second half and finished with 338 rushing yards. Last week: No. 3 This week: vs. Lausanne .

    4. Germantown (1-0): Despite it being the first start for many Red Devils, Germantown handled business with a 50-0 win over visiting Raleigh-Egypt. Last week: No. 4 This week: at South Panola.

    5. Covington (1-0): Running back Skylan Smith rushed for 230 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in the Chargers' 35-0 win over Munford on Thursday. Last week: No. 5 This week: at Brighton

    7. Collierville (1-0): In senior quarterback Grant Troutman's first game as the starter, he powered the Dragons to a 20-10 victory over 2A champion Decatur Co. Riverside with 182 yards passing and three touchdowns. Last week: No. 8 This week: at Beech .

    8. Fairley (1-0): Fairley has yet to allow a point in a victory since the 2022 season. The Bulldogs' offense did quite a bit last Friday as well in a 62-0 win over St. George's. Last week: No. 9 This week: at Kirby .

    9. Memphis University School (0-1): The Owls played Bartlett close before Johnson's second-half explosion in MUS' 41-17 loss Friday. Quarterback Brady Hughes and his receivers made several nice connections and should be a challenge for opposing defenses. Last week: No. 7 This week: vs. Melrose

    10. Melrose (1-0): Melrose wasn't at full strength Saturday versus Memphis East, but quarterback Tavarco Jackson scored three touchdowns to pull away for a 20-7 victory. Missouri commit Jamarion Morrow should make his Melrose debut this week. Last week: No. 10 This week: at MUS
