A Piperton area pastor is dead and family members say his wife is in critical condition after a car crash in Southaven Tuesday.

Bobby Mullins was pastor of Kirk Baptist Church. His wife Wanda Mullins works as an ICU waiting room receptionist at Baptist DeSoto Hospital.

In a statement on Facebook Wednesday, the couple's children confirmed their father's death and said their mother sustained "catastrophic injuries" in the crash.

Police did not release any details about the crash, citing the open investigation.

The couple has a home in Hernando.

In their statement, Mullins' three children, Brandon, Melody, and Mallory, mourned their loss and thanked others for their prayers.

"We are shattered and shocked but have complete peace," the statement read. "We know where our dad is as he most faithfully preached about the hope of Jesus Christ and Eternity week in and week out. But more importantly, he lived that hope out everyday to his family."

A Memphis native, Bobby Mullins previously served as national alumni president of the Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary from 2004-2006. He also served on the executive board of the Tennessee Baptist Convention from 2006-2011.

In 2009, Mullins founded Back To The Basics Ministries, which according to a bio on Mullins' website , "is to encourage and help those who are making a fresh start of some kind in life and how to deal with it from a basic biblical view, because at some time we all need a fresh start."

A primary focus of the ministry is the Christian TV program, "A Fresh Start," which airs in Knoxville.

Mullins has spent more than 40 years in ministry and was on the ministerial staff of at least nine churches, wrote two books and composed dozens of songs , according to his bio.

At the time of his death, he and his wife had been married for 44 years.

This is a developing story. It will be updated when more information is available.
