Memphis football's game at South Florida has been moved to Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT because of the impending threat of Hurricane Milton , the American Athletic Conference announced Tuesday.

TV information will be determined later, the conference said.

The game had been scheduled for 6 p.m. CT Friday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. Milton was expected to make landfall in Florida late Wednesday, with officials warning that life-threatening storm surge of 15 feet could be headed to the area.

Widespread evacuations, including in Tampa, have been ongoing since Monday. The Tampa airport closed on Tuesday morning and will reopen when it's safe to do so. South Florida canceled classes through at least Thursday.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who will play at the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, left Tampa on Tuesday and planned to spend the week in New Orleans.

Officials from Memphis, South Florida and the AAC have been in contact the past few days to figure out the best way to proceed with the game.

Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said Monday the Tigers were preparing like the game would be played on Friday. Memphis had been scheduled to fly to Tampa on Thursday.

The game could be critical for the AAC title race. Memphis (4-1, 0-1) and South Florida (2-3, 0-1) were both picked to finish near the top of the conference before the season.
