Memphis brewery brings home gold medal from Great American Beer Festival

WISEACRE Brewing Co. won big at the Great American Beer Festival .

The Memphis brewery's Sky Dog Premium Lager took home a gold medal in the “American Light Lager” category on Oct. 12 at the festival in Denver.

“We are over the moon about this news," said Kellan Bartosch, co-founder along with Davin Bartosch of WISEACRE, in a news release. "My brother, Davin, fell in love with light lagers long before we opened in 2013 , which I think was very ahead-of-his-time for someone who finished brewing school in 2008, just as heavier beers were starting to gain momentum.”

Sky Dog was first released at the 2023 Mempho Music Festival as a single 16-ounce can, but it became a year-round beer available in six-packs by spring 2024.

“Something unique about making Sky Dog is our desire to connect with non-traditional craft beer consumers," Kellan Bartosch said. "This beer is 99 calories and the price point hits below craft and in line with import beers."

This is the second Great American Beer Festival award for WISEACRE. Its 129-calorie pilsner Tiny Bomb took home a bronze medal at the competition in 2014.

WISEACRE will host a Great American Beer Festival victory celebration at its OG and HQ taprooms on Saturday, Oct. 19.

El Mero Taco will have food specials and Crazy Arms will perform live from 4-7 p.m. at the OG location, 2783 Broad Ave. The HQ location at 398 S B.B. King Blvd. will feature a live performance by DJ Superman and food from Little Bettie Pizza & Snacks, which was recently featured on Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives."
