The NFL suspended Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Zay Jones for five games on Friday for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Jones, 29, will have to sit out the season's first five games without pay and will be eligible to return for a Week 6 game at Green Bay on Oct. 13. Jones was arrested last November and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery causing bodily harm following an alleged altercation with the mother of his child. Florida prosecutors dropped the case in March. He caught 34 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns in nine games (seven starts) with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. After being released by the Jaguars in April, Jones signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals worth up to $2.25 million. Jones has 287 catches for 3,028 yards and 18 touchdowns in 104 games (67 starts) with the Buffalo Bills (2017-19), Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders (2019-21) and Jaguars. Bears safety Douglas Coleman III returned to Chicago on Friday after being hospitalized overnight in Kansas City. Coach Matt Eberflus gave an update to 670 The Score on Friday, saying Coleman was walking and in good spirits following a frightening incident in Thursday night's preseason game against the Chiefs. Coleman, 26, was hurt while making a tackle on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. His neck appeared to snap backward when he made contact with Kansas City wide receiver Cornell Powell. Coleman was tended to by medical personnel and placed on a stabilizing board before being loaded into an ambulance. Eberflus said after the Bears' 34-21 win that Coleman had movement in his limbs. Coleman has yet to play in the NFL. He is trying to make Chicago's roster after spending three seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League. The NCAA Football Oversight Committee proposed the elimination of the spring transfer portal window to the Division I council this week, Yahoo Sports and The Athletic reported Friday. At present, Division I football players can enter the transfer portal in two different windows during the year: a 30-day period after the conference championship games are played, as well as April 16-30, which fall in line with spring practices. The April window is what's on the chopping block. Players do not need to commit to their new school during those windows. Those dates are merely when the athletes are able to enter the portal. The Power 4 conferences and the American Football Coaches Association support the move to get rid of the April window, Yahoo reported. The idea comes amid the settlement of the House v. NCAA court case that would impose 105-player scholarship limits in football and eliminate walk-ons starting in 2025-26.
