As we embark on the new school year at Coshocton City Schools, the excitement and dedication I see across our campus is truly remarkable. Each day, our students are actively immersing themselves in their learning while also forming meaningful relationships with their teachers and classmates. From academic pursuits to athletic achievements, they are truly embracing what it means to be a Redskin.

In addition to this promising start, I want to highlight two important policy changes, both of which are designed to support the well-being and academic success of our students.

To ensure our students can fully engage in their education, we have adopted a new cell phone policy based on the model provided by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. Research clearly shows excessive use of cell phones during school hours can have detrimental effects on student performance and mental health. By limiting cell phone use during school hours, we aim to strengthen our focus on learning and create an environment where students can thrive academically and socially.

The policy is straightforward. Students are prohibited from using cell phones during school hours. Exceptions are made for students with specific needs as outlined in their individualized education programs (IEPs) or 504 plans, as well as for health-related concerns. We believe by minimizing distractions, we can help students concentrate better, engage more deeply with their lessons and build stronger connections with their peers and teachers.

In our commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students, we have also implemented a drug testing policy for those participating in extracurricular activities. This policy is not only about maintaining a drug-free environment but also about encouraging our students to lead by example and make healthy choices.

As we move forward through the school year, I am confident these policies will help foster an even more positive and productive environment for all. The pride and commitment within our school community are truly inspiring and I’m excited to see all we will accomplish together in the months ahead.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in making Coshocton City Schools a place where students thrive.
