Several Spanish mustangs have been attacked by wolves in Bayfield County over the past couple months, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

Reports obtained by the Daily Press indicate a Spanish mustang mare was attacked on June 16 and a Spanish mustang foal was attacked on July 14. Both incidences occurred “on a farm located in the town of Bell.”

Wolves in Bayfield County have recently targeted several more Spanish mustangs, but the DNR doesn’t say where specifically these incidences took place. The DNR reports eight Spanish mustangs were either killed or injured between June 29 and July 16.

On July 14, the DNR said auditory harassment devices would be implemented and on July 16 the DNR said the “animals would be relocated in an effort to prevent additional conflicts.”

Area resident Cynthia Samels feels the horses at the farm are “sitting ducks” and believes these reports are unusual.

“Generally wolves don’t kill horses. This is very unique. The situation suggests they are injured, medically compromised or have no way to escape,” she said.
